Kamala Harris
Kamala Devi Harris born October 20 1964) is an American lawyer and politician who is currently the 49th vice president of the United States. She is the first female vice president and the highest-ranking female politician in U.S. history, as also the first African American and first Asian American vice president. Harris is a member of the Democratic Party and was previously the attorney general of California between 2011 and 2017. Additionally she was the United States senator representing California between 2017 and 2021. Harris was born and raised in Oakland, California. Her career began with the Alameda County District Attorney's Office. Harris was later recruited to the San Francisco District Attorney's Office. She was elected San Francisco district attorney in 2003. Harris was elected Attorney general of California in the year 2010. In 2014, she won re-election. Harris was the junior United States senator from California between 2017 and 2021. Harris defeated Loretta Sánchez in the 2016 Senate elections, becoming the second African American woman, and the first South Asian American, to be a senator in the United States Senate. As a senator, Harris advocated for health care, federal de-scheduling and the legalization of cannabis, a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants as well as the DREAM Act which bans assault weapons. National attention was gained for her sharp questioning of Trump administration officials during Senate hearings. The most notable was Trump's second Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh who was accused of sexual misconduct.
